During my studies in Interactive Media Design at Metropolitan University, I was given an assignment to design a mobile app. I had full creative reign over this process. So I chose something I am passionate about and got to work.
When was the last time you visited a gallery, museum, or cultural event?
This project is here to try and convince you that you can do that every day when you walk on the streets of your city. I chose to start with the city I live in, Belgrade, the capital of Serbia.I spend a lot of time walking through Belgrade, the streets are full of people quickly making their way to their destinations. My aim was to create an app that makes people linger and actually see what is around them. Belgrade is full of colorful murals, pieces of art that often go unnoticed.
The Belgrade Street Art application can be used by locals and tourists alike. Its purpose is to bring selected murals in Savamala, a urban neighborhood in Belgrade, closer to observers through an explanation of the work, the artist's biography and a gallery of other works and a link to the artist's website or page. What makes the app special is the AR experience - when the user is physically in front of the mural he can open the camera and a custom made animation is loaded on top of the real world artwork.
You can see what happens if somebody scans the murals below.
Some key takeaways from this project are:
Finding the magic intersection: A successful project will happen when your passions are intersected with a problem you have and what you’re good at.
Sometimes perfect is better than done: Always strive to delight people and go the extra mile. It’ll be worth the effort.
Disclaimer- I only did this project for the fun of it. The photos are not mine and the animations are not affiliated with the original artists of the murals.
